Mamah Borthwick Cheney met Wright while he was working on a house for her and her husband, and they began an affair.

The two remained together as lovers until Kitty finally granted the divorce to Wright.

While still technically married to Miriam (she had left him after only about six months of marriage), Wright met Olga Ivanova Lazovich, better known as Olgivanna Lloyd Wright.

Robert Llewellyn, the last of the Wright children, was born in 1903.

In 1909, Frank Lloyd Wright left his family and went to Europe with Mamah Borthwick Cheney, the wife of a client.

Catherine passed away on March 24, 1959 in a Santa Monica sanitarium, just three weeks before the death of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Frank and Mamah escaped to Italy, creating quite the social scandal.Edwin granted Mamah a divorce, but Kitty kept hoping that Frank would come back to her and refused to divorce him.

The story ended on a very sad note for Mamah and Frank.

I would like to imagine that Frank Lloyd Wright’s pure approach to architecture did transform him on a personal level as well…although it took a few years!

While Frank Lloyd Wright’s brand of Organic Modernism proved appealing to progressive clients in Cincinnati, Wright himself did not seem so attractive.In 1926, Wright’s second wife, Miriam, brought legal action against him.In 1927, Wright’s wife Miriam finally granted him a divorce, which allowed he and Olgivanna to marry.

After this, Wright's life at Taliesin settled down and he and Olgivanna began taking live-in architectural pupils and apprentices.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio in Oak Park, Ill., is a microcosm of the prolific designer’s ever-evolving architectural aesthetic.The original dining room (below) became Wright’s study after the 1895 renovation.

The three-sided far end of the room and window panel above were added when the dining room below it was expanded in 1895.

The crib (below, center) is a genuine Wright family heirloom, and actually dates back to Wright’s wife’s family [Tobin], circa 1850.

One can only imagine how much fun the Wright children had in this amazingly well-conceived and incredibly unique playroom.

Taliesin: Wright at the Time

Martha "Mamah" Borthwick (June 19, 1869 - August 15, 1914) is primarily noted for her relationship with Frank Lloyd Wright, which ended when she was murdered.A few years later, while Wright was away working on Chicago’s Midway Gardens, Cheney and her two children and some workmen sat down to lunch at Taliesin.Mr. Wright was in Chicago, where business had called him several days before and he escaped the murders hatchet.

Adjoining this dwelling, Mr. Wright himself lived.

Frank Lloyd Wright buildings nominated for UNESCO World Heritage List
